Senior Activities
The Senior Resources Department provides a number of fun and exciting opportunities for older adults. These activities provide a sense of community for older adults and the chance to connect and grow long lasting friendships.
A number of activities are listed below and we are trying to add more all the time so come back regularly to see what new opportunities await you.
Current Schedule
View our most up to date activity and event information at the City's new Recreation Portal!
You can also download a monthly schedule of the Friendship Center (PDF).
Member Meeting & Travel Program
Find out the latest offerings at the Friendship Center plus new travel opportunities. Travel broadens the mind and brightens the day. Day trips are planned by the department and accompanied by a staff member. Favorite sites are visited and new adventures too.
Four professional tour companies high-light their day trips and preview extended trips at the quarterly Member and Travel Meetings. Please register in advance at the front desk.
Lifelong Learning
A partnership between the City Of Westland and Wayne County Community College District to offer a program for senior citizens within the community courses that will provide leisure as well as enhanced skills. These courses have included technology classes, a variety of exercise classes, cooking classes, estate planning, nutrition as well as how to use the Internet. All classes offered at the Friendship Center. We are bringing the learning to you!
Sports Leagues
The Friendship Center offers a Golf League and a Pickleball League.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteering is something that enriches the soul and improves the lives of many. Our Angel Wings group makes blankets, booties, gowns and hats for premature babies in five area hospitals. Our Angels Above group takes gently used wedding gowns and creates beautiful outfits for the babies that do not make it. Other volunteers help decorate for events, do the bulletin boards, sell Share The Wealth tickets at parties, and assist in the kitchen amongst other things. The Friendship Center is always looking for volunteers that share their talents after retiring from their professional careers.
Friendship Center Events
Perhaps one of the things the center is most known for is its social gatherings. The center hosts many events during the year, and traditional events like our Volunteer Luncheon, and Health and Resource Day.
The Thanksgiving and Christmas parties are two of the biggest events each year.
The Center enjoys changing things up regularly to keep things fresh and engaging for our members. Some of our favorite activities are:
- Community Trivia
- Dance Party
- End of Summer Potluck
- Fantasy Football
- Field Day
- Game Night
- Jukebox Bingo
- Karaoke
- March Madness
- Octoberfest
- Opening Day Party
- Sips & Splatters
- Summer Picnic
