Senior Activities

The Senior Resources Department provides a number of fun and exciting opportunities for older adults.  These activities provide a sense of community for older adults and the chance to connect and grow long lasting friendships.

A number of activities are listed below and we are trying to add more all the time so come back regularly to see what new opportunities await you.

Member Meeting & Travel Program

Find out the latest offerings at the Friendship Center plus new travel opportunities. Travel broadens the mind and brightens the day. Day trips are planned by the department and accompanied by a staff member. Favorite sites are visited and new adventures too.

Four professional tour companies high-light their day drips and preview extended trips at the monthly Member and Travel Meetings held the second Friday of each month. Please register in advance at the front desk.

We have a quarterly Armchair Travel program where we visit different destinations, near and far with a treat from that country and a group discussion afterward.

Lifelong Learning2016 Golf League Group Photo

A partnership between the City Of Westland and Wayne County Community College District to offer a program for senior citizens within the community courses that will provide leisure as well as enhanced skills. These courses have included technology classes, a variety of exercise classes, cooking classes, estate planning, nutrition as well as how to use the Internet. All classes offered at the Friendship Center. We are bringing the learning to you!

Sports Leagues

The Friendship Center offers a Golf League and a Bowling League.

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteering is something that enriches the soul and improves the lives of many. Our Angel Wings group makes blankets, booties, gowns and hats for premature babies in five area hospitals. Our Angels Above group takes gently used wedding gowns and creates beautiful outfits for the babies that do not make it. Our "Couponers" for the military cuts coupons and ships them to military bases over seas so our serviceman and women can use them to purchase items at a discount on base. Other volunteers help decorate for events, do the bulletin boards, sell Share The Wealth tickets at parties, help with phone calls, make tax appointments and assist in the kitchen amongst other things. The Friendship Center is always looking for volunteers that share their talents after retiring from their professional careers.

Friendship Center Events

Perhaps one of the things the center is most known for is its social gatherings. The center hosts many events during the year, and while traditional events like our Volunteer Luncheon, Health and Resource Day, and Senior Olympics.

The Thanksgiving and Christmas parties are two of the biggest events each year. It is not uncommon to have 400 to 500 guests attend our Christmas Celebration - our largest and most favored of the year.

The Center enjoys changing things up regularly to keep things fresh and engaging for our seniors. In the past we have done everything from:

  • Center Piece Arranging
  • Community Trivia
  • End of Summer Potluck
  • Fantasy Football
  • Fashion Show
  • Free Monthly Movies
  • Mexican Fiesta
  • Octoberfest
  • Spring Tea
  • Summer Picnic
  • Valentines Day Party
  • Winter Blues Bash
  • Wreath Making
