Skating Activities

The Mike Modano Ice Arena offers fun for all ages and skill sets.  From freestyle figure skating and hockey to open skating and lessons to hone your skills.  We look forward to seeing you enjoy the arena no matter what your favorite activity is.

Hockey 101 - Learn to Play

Joe Burton netted 600 career minor league goals and is the Central Hockey League's all-time leading scorer. Take advantage of this unique opportunity as he shares his knowledge about basic stick skills such as stick handling, passing, shooting and scoring. Learn fundamental skating techniques such as forward striding, turning, stopping, backwards skating and edging from a former pro. 

Two sessions are available and you can sign up for either session or sign up for both to become a real powerhouse on the ice.  Each Individual session will consist of instructional meetings held every Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. for 9 weeks.

  • Session 1: October 22, 2021 - December 17, 2021
  • Session 2: January 7, 2022 - March 4, 2022

Age requirements for sessions are 6 to 12 years of age and full hockey equipment is required for each instructional meeting. There's a limit of 20 attendees per session. Individual sessions cost $90 to attend each or get a discounted rate of $160 to attend both sessions.

Open Skate

Freestyle Figure Skating

The Wayne-Westland Figure Skating Club encourages the instruction, practice, and advancement of our members in skating skills, technical development, free skating, and all other types of figure skating.  To learn more, please visit the official WWFSC website.

Group Lessons

Prepare for Success, Champion the Day, and Discover you Can with lessons at the Mike Modano Ice Arena!  We've partnered with Learn to Skate USA to teach kids and adults the proper techniques needed to be a safe skater.  Details can be found on the Learn to Skate page on the Wayne-Westland Figure Skating Club site.


The Westland Hockey Association offers the TimBits "learn to play hockey" program for kids from 4 to 9 years old.  Players must provide a copy of their birth certificate and have completed a USA Hockey registration before skating.  To learn more, please visit the Westland TimBits Program page.
