Complete Distribution System Materials Inventory
About
In response to concerns that were found in some communities of Michigan related to lead contamination in drinking water, the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act was amended in 2018 to focus on strengthening protections against lead contamination in drinking water. As part of this amended Act, the City of Westland is required to maintain an inventory of service line materials within the City's water distribution borders by January 1, 2025. The City had already developed an inventory of the service line materials well before the requirement date in order to ensure that the residents of Westland safest possible distribution lines.
Water Service Lines
Every home has water service lines run into them to provide clean, safe water for your use. The material that was used to make those service lines has changed over the years based on available technologies and building codes. Most water service lines found in Westland will be copper or plastic pipe but some homes may be galvanized steel or even, in some highly unlikely situations, lead. The City has worked for years developing an inventory of the service lines it comes into contact with as Public Service Workers and Building Inspectors are in the field. This is the Complete Distribution System Materials Inventory.
Complete Distribution System Materials Inventory
The purpose of the Complete Distribution System Materials Inventory (CDSMI) is to characterize, record, and maintain a comprehensive inventory of distribution system materials, including service line materials on both public and private property. Maintenance of an accurate inventory supports effective asset management planning, allows the City to focus any needed lead service line replacement efforts, and help provide notification of those serviced by a lead service line. With the changes to the Michigan Safe Drinking Water Act, the City is required to publicly post on our website the current inventory for residents to be able to view. This way you, the residents, will know if we have been able to inventory your home's service lines or if you need to use the Water Service Line Self Reporting Program to help the City identify your service lines.
Ways to Help Maintain the Complete Distribution System Materials Inventory
Helping the City maintain the inventory is easy! You can use the Water Service Line Self Reporting Program to provide the information directly to the people in charge of the inventory.
If you need assistance or would like to schedule a City of Westland representative to come to your home and identify your home's water service line material, please call the Department of Public Service at 734-728-1770 or email us at dps@cityofwestland.com.
