About

The Planning and Building Department is a multi-disciplinary department providing a range of planning and development services to citizens, business owners, appointed boards, and commissions. Through the work of two divisions our Department ensures that all development is consistent with State Law, Building Codes, the Comprehensive Master Plan, Zoning Ordinance and Development Code. We work together to protect the safety and welfare of the community.

Planning and Zoning staff provide advice and technical expertise to assist citizens, elected officials, committees, and business owners in understanding controlling regulations, key issues, and priorities for land development, with a long term commitment to economic vitality, design quality, and environment integrity. The Comprehensive Master Plan and Zoning Ordinance are our guiding documents.

Building staff serve the City of Westland community collaboratively through the application of the current Michigan Building Code, with the mission to protect the lives, safety and welfare of Westland residents and the general public to accomplish mutually beneficial goals such as the safe, timely, and successful completion of projects. The department focuses on education, and strives to maintain a customer-service driven, problem solving orientation for the plan review, permitting and inspection functions.
