Board of Ethics

About

The Board of Ethics is governed by a five-member board appointed by the Mayor. Members serve a three-year term, except that of those first appointed, two shall serve for three years, two for two years, and one for one year. Members must reside in the City of Westland. Current City Officials or employees are not eligible for appointment. 

The Ethics Committee assists with written opinions on ethical questions and to engage in activity that promotes ethical behavior as defined in the Westland City Ordinances section 2-501 through 2-512, and other applicable ordinances and State laws. Members must keep all complaints, requests for advisory opinions and all documents strictly confidential.

Ethics Complaints and Advisory Opinions

All ethics complaints and request for advisory opinions (collectively, requests) must be filed within three months of the date of the incident associated with the request.  The request must be based upon alleged unethical conduct that has occurred.  These requests cannot be speculative, hypothetical, or based on rumor.

Again, to the fullest extent permitted under applicable law, the Board of Ethics shall observe strict confidentiality for all requests and all documents received regarding the same, prior to a final disposition of the request.

Requests can be filed:

  • through our Online Request Form.
  • in person at Westland City Hall and provided to the Director of Personnel.

Meetings

The Board of Ethics meets once per quarter, as needed.
