Community Resources

Life can be difficult and there are a number of services and organizations in and around Westland that are there to assist residents of Westland when they are in need.  Below is a list of some of the available programs.  If you need additional assistance please reach out to any of following City Departments for additional resources:

Food and Housing Assistance

Commodities Food Distribution

The Community Development / Housing Department coordinates the distribution of surplus commodity foods to qualified low-income households in need. To view the program and see if you qualify for assistance, please visit Commodities Food Distribution.

Michigan Homeowner Assistance Fund (MIHAF)

The Homeowner Assistance Fund was established to mitigate hardships associated with the coronavirus pandemic by providing funds to prevent homeowner mortgage delinquencies, defaults, foreclosure, loss of utilities or home energy services and displacements of homeowners experiencing financial hardship on or after January 21, 2020 or for those homeowners who experience a coronavirus pandemic financial hardship that began before January 21, 2020 but continued after that date.  To find out more about eligibility, to apply, and for more information please visit the Michigan Homeowner Assistance Fund (MIHAF) website.

Wayne County Emergency Rental Assistance Program (ERAP)

Wayne County ERAP is available to those in Wayne County who have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, who are experiencing housing instability, and whose household income is at or below 80% of Area Median Income (AMI).  For full details and to apply for assistance, please visit the Wayne County ERAP website.

Community Development Programs

The Community Development Department manages Westland's federally funded Community Development Block Grant and HOME programs. These programs provide a variety of activities for low to moderate income Westland residents. Participants in these programs must meet federal income and family qualification guidelines. Housing Choice Voucher Program

The housing choice voucher program is a federal government's program for assisting low income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford housing. For more information, please visit the Housing Choice Voucher Program website.

Hegira Health, Inc.

Hegira Health, Inc. (HHI) is a private non-profit organization that offers specialized mental health and substance abuse treatment programs to individuals of all ages and primary care physician services.  For details regarding the care offered by Hegira Health, Inc. please visit the Hegira Health website.

Medical Equipment Supply Loans

The Westland Fire Department can help you with your durable medical equipment needs. They often have on hand wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches and shower chairs. If they do not have something in their inventory, they can assist you in acquiring what you need. Medical Supply Request Form

General Assistance Programs

FCC Lifeline Program

Administered by the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), the Lifeline program provides a discount on phone service for qualifying low-income consumers to ensure that all Americans have the opportunities and security that phone service brings. FCC Affordable Connectivity Program

The Affordable Connectivity Program is a FCC benefit program that helps ensure that households can afford the broadband they need for work, school, healthcare and more.

The benefit provides eligible households:

  •  Discount toward internet service for eligible households. 
  • One-time discount  to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.

Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency

Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency offers several assistance programs in the areas of Quality Housing, Family Stability and Economic Opportunities.  These include:

  • utility payment assistance
  • water service assistance
  • mortgage support
  • weatherization assistance
  • head start and other after school programs
  • employment assistance and many more programs to assist people in need

Public Transportation Options

Nankin Transit

Nankin Transit provides bus transportation to seniors and handicapped individuals in the cities of Canton, Garden City, Inkster, Wayne, and Westland. 

Smart Bus

The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) is Southeast Michigan's only regional bus system helping people connect to work, school, medical appointments, shopping centers, entertainment and cultural events.

Youth Development Programs

Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center

Kronk Gym (ESCOT Program)
