EMERGENCY WARMING CENTERS OPEN
With the temperature dipping below freezing, the City of Westland has a number of warming centers available for those in need. Below you will find a list of warming centers with their address, hours and a phone number to call and verify there is room available. Additionally you will find other helpful information.
The Cold and Your Safety
- It is important to watch for signs of hypothermia and frostbite. The State of Michigan has more information about the warning signs of hypothermia and frostbite.
- If you know or see someone out in the cold, please contact 911 or the non-emergency police phone line at (734) 722-9600. Our emergency personnel will work diligently to ensure they are taken to a safe place to stay warm.
- Pets should also be considered with the colder weather. Dogs cannot handle being left outside in temperatures below freezing for more than a few minutes without being at extreme risk for hypothermia, frostbite, and even death. Please report findings of animals left outside without proper shelter to Neighborhood Services at (734) 713-3733, the Animal Care and Control Services online form, or the non-emergency police line at (734) 722-9600 for after hour reporting.
- Your house is also susceptible to issues caused by extreme cold. Be careful with your water pipes. Here are some helpful tips for preventing and thawing frozen pipes.
