Housing Choice Voucher Program
About
The Westland Housing Commission (WHC) manages the Housing Choice Voucher Program. The Westland Housing Commission does not own any rental property. In order to assist you with your general housing needs, a book of available rental properties is located at the Jefferson Barns Community Vitality Center. Listings of Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program landlords and apartments in the City of Westland are available for distribution.
Waiting List Information
The waiting list is currently closed. Please sign up for waiting list alerts at Community Housing Network.
If you are a current WHC applicant and need to report a change, please complete the the Waiting List Change Form (PDF) and return the to Housing and Community Development Department. We recommend that you make a copy of the form prior to delivery.
Family Self-Sufficiency Program
The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program is available for our current participants of the Housing choice Voucher Program through the Westland Housing Commission. The purpose of the program is to assist families to become economically self-sufficient, establishing a five-year work and/or education plan with a FSS case manager. FSS staff assists the family to overcome obstacles to self-sufficiency, links the family with the appropriate service agencies and provides counseling, job training, and education assistance.
Assisted Living Housing Choice Voucher Program
The Assisted Living Housing Choice Voucher Program provides housing assistance to eligible applicants, age 50 and over, who require the advantages of assisted living. Through this program, participants must select to live at one of five assisted living communities located in the City of Westland.
In order to participate, applicants must meet Federal income guidelines, as determined by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) income limits, adjusted by family size. The waiting list for the Assisted Living HCV Program is open. Interested persons can receive additional information and an application by visiting or calling the Housing and Community Development Department.
Westgate Towers
The Westland Housing Commission processes housing voucher applications for Westgate Towers, an independent senior living community, ages 62 and older. With the housing voucher, applicants pay 30% of their income for rent. For more information about Westgate Towers, call 734-729-2900 or view the Westgate Tower Brochure (PDF).
Veterans Supportive Housing Program
The Veterans Supportive Housing Program provides rental assistance for housing located in the historic Norwayne subdivision. Rent is based on the participant’s income. Supportive services include family self-sufficiency and veterans’ assistance. Take a look at the Veteran's Housing Program Guidelines (PDF) for more information.
