Dear Very Important Resident (VIR):

I’m excited to inform you of improvements being made to your weekly curbside garbage, compost and recycling services! Through a partnership with Midwest Sanitation, the City’s refuse contractor for over 17 years, enhancements are being made to the method by which your garbage, compost and recycling will be collected and properly disposed. These changes will take effect September 1, 2014.

In mid-August, you will take receipt of a new Black 96 gallon Toter similar to the ones used to dispose of recyclable materials. This Black Toter is the only container you may use for disposal of trash; all trash should be placed in garbage bags and placed in the Toter. Each Toter comes with a 10 year warranty, is on wheels for easy maneuverability and comes with a lid to prevent trash from blowing around or being accessible to animals and insects. As you do today, please call 734.728.1770 to schedule, at a nominal cost, collection for items too large for the Toter.

Over the years, our All American City has grown! With a goal of efficiency and to effectively manage fuel and other costs, the collection days for some residents will change. Route changes are included in this packet and will begin the week of August 11th. Please review the attached map and visit the interactive map online at to see if your collection date has changed.

As for recycling, effective July 1, 2014 the City will no longer have an agreement with RecycleBank. This was a program that has been offered for 5 years and cost the City $175,000 annually and only had 3% of the residents utilizing it. As a member, you will have until July 1, 2015 to redeem any RecycleBank points you may have accumulated provided your account has not been inactive for more than 12 months after which any points accumulated would expire. RecycleBank will still be available to current users through their online activities that can be found at

Key dates to mark on your calendars:

  • August 11th new garbage routes/days and new curbside recycling routes/days go into effect
  • September 1st residents should start using the new black garbage carts and continue to use their existing blue recycling carts on their assigned pick up days.

Please note that curbside recycling in the blue carts will continue to be picked up just as it was before.  The only change is that the City has not continued its contract with Recycle Bank.
