Through quality programs promoting life safety, the Education Division has had contact with over 11,500 citizens including over 8,600 students throughout the Wayne-Westland School District, the Livonia School District, and preschools since 2001. Fire safety in the schools and the community is promoted through special events such as Fire Prevention Week activities, Stop the Violence and the Community Picnics.

Since 2006, the Training Division has brought over 110 different topics annually for training to fire suppression personnel. MISOHA Part 74 and NFPA 1500 mandate the training requirements to include the following:

MIOSHA Part 74

Respiratory Fit Testing

The 62 members of fire suppression train on a daily basis to hone skills, maintain professionalism and provide the best possible customer service to the citizens of Westland. The next time you see firefighters training in the community, feel free to observe, take pictures or ask questions.

FIRE EXTINGUISHER TRAINING

The training and education division offers a one hour class on the proper use of fire extinguishers in the home or a business. This class is comprised of a combination of classroom discussion that focuses on the theory of fire and examines the types of extinguishers in use today. A live fire prop is used for all class participants to get hands on experience using the proper methods of extinguishment to put out a fire. This opportunity is open to any group of 10 or larger for home use and any business in the City of Westland. Our fire extinguisher training also discusses the role of the employer as stated in 29CFR1910.157 which is the OSHA requirement for using portable fire extinguishers. If you would like to schedule a class, please contact the Training and Education Division at 734 467 3201 or click here.
